Thanksgiving is coming. Do you know someone who struggles to put food on the table? One out of 5 children in Collin County are considered “food insecure” – kids who might struggle to find their next meal. Over 7,000 kids enrolled in the Plano Independent School District are eligible for free and reduced price lunch and 1,800 of these children are considered chronically hungry. It’s tough to learn when you’re hungry, or worried about your next meal.
Below are some organizations working to help feed local hungry kids, know of others? They would all love donations of food, time and cold hard cash (don’t forget…they can buy more with $1 than you can).
Food 4 Kids Plano
North Texas Food Bank
Operated by the North Texas Food Bank, this organization, this group provide chronically hungry children with a backpack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods on Fridays during the school year. They take donations of food, time and money (even $5 can provide a backpack full of nutritious food for a child during the weekend).
These groups collect food donations and assemble packs of food for kids to take home over school breaks, to make sure they don’t go hungry while they are out of school. Visit their Facebook groups to learn how you can help:
