My husband and I love the Skippyjon Jones books. In fact, the last time the Scholastic Book Fair came to school he had me buy a Skippyjon Jones stuffed animal – for him! So when we saw the Skippyjon Jones Musical was headed for the Dallas Children’s Theater we grabbed our two (one skeptical, one grumpy) kids and checked it out. We both loved it and thought all of the actors did a fabulous job. Our skeptical 6 year old enjoyed it (he said the first half was better than the second) and our grumpy 11 year old said it was better than he expected. Critics.
If you’re not familiar with the books, Skippyjon Jones is a mischievous Siamese cat with a vivid imagination. He gets in trouble, is sent to his room, and comes up with crazy adventures in his closet involving the chimichanga gang of chihuahuas. There are two thirty-minute acts with a 15 minute intermission (there is water, candy and crackers for sale plus Skippyjon Jones items). The play moves fast enough and utilizes the main stage and two side stages (plus a couple of audience entrances) so it will hold your child’s attention well. It’s recommended for ages 4 and up.
After the show you can meet the actors. Have them sign your program or bring a Skippyjon Jones book! Several kids were dressed up as superheros or had on Skippyjon Jones capes and ears.
The show runs through February 22nd with a “sensory friendly” performance on February 21st at 4:30pm. Click through for showtimes and tickets. They don’t charge extra for buying in advance online (thank you!), and seating is general admission with two section prices, so don’t get there too late. We arrived about 20 minutes before the show began, grabbed our tickets at Will Call and had no problems getting good seats.
